This misses the point. Suppose you wanted to raise a "moral" child. The end result is a new creation; the writer's thinking for the first time now exists within the reader's mind.
Certainly, one of the most important distinctions that teachers need to routinely make, and which takes disciplined thinking to make, is that between reasoning and subjective reaction. Finally, we have to realize that we already have instruments available for assessing what might be called the fine-textured micro-skills of critical thinking.
It has rewarded the kind of thinking that lends itself to multiple choice machine-graded assessment. Uncritical problem solving is unintelligible. To put it another way, if an infant does form an emotional attachment to an adult, what important cognitive abilities is she demonstrating.
It is in the totality of this intellectually rigorous atmosphere that natural curiosity thrives.
What data, what experiences, what evidence are given. In reading, as I have said, there is the logic of the thinking of the author and the logic of the thinking of the reader. Left to itself it will soar like a kite without a tail, that is, right into the ground.
